Schedules of The Indian Constitution

The Indian Constitution has 12 schedules. 

Schedule 1: This schedule lists the names of the states and union territories of India, along with their territorial jurisdiction.

Schedule 2: This schedule contains provisions relating to the emoluments, allowances, and privileges of the following high-ranking officials:

  • The President of India
  • The Governors of the states
  • The Speakers and Deputy Speakers of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha
  • The Chairmen and Deputy Chairmen of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha
  • The Speakers and Deputy Speakers of the Legislative Assemblies of the states
  • The Chairmen and Deputy Chairmen of the Legislative Councils of the states
  • The Judges of the Supreme Court and the High Courts
  • The Comptroller and Auditor General of India
Schedule 3: This schedule contains the forms of oaths or affirmations that are to be taken by the following officials:

  • The President of India
  • The Governors of the states
  • The Members of Parliament
  • The Members of the Legislative Assemblies of the states
  • The Judges of the Supreme Court and the High Courts
  • The Comptroller and Auditor General of India

Schedule 4: This schedule specifies the allocation of seats in the Rajya Sabha to the states and union territories.

Schedule 5: This schedule deals with the administration and control of scheduled areas and scheduled tribes.

Schedule 6: This schedule deals with the administration of tribal areas in the states of Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram.

Schedule 7: This schedule divides the powers between the Union and the states by listing them in three lists:

  • The Union List contains the subjects that are under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Union government.
  • The State List contains the subjects that are under the exclusive jurisdiction of the state governments.
  • The Concurrent List contains the subjects that are under the jurisdiction of both the Union and the state governments.

Schedule 8: This schedule lists the 22 languages that are recognized by the Constitution of India.

Schedule 9: This schedule contains a list of laws that are protected from judicial review. This means that these laws cannot be struck down by the courts as being unconstitutional.

Schedule 10: This schedule deals with the disqualification of members of Parliament and state legislatures on grounds of defection.

Schedule 11: This schedule specifies the powers, responsibilities, and authorities of panchayats.

Schedule 12: This schedule specifies the powers, responsibilities, and authorities of municipalities.
